Comparing Progressive Presidents

Define Progressivism in government

Explain Roosevelt’s “New Nationalism” and his beliefs about the existence of big business and it’s relationship with government (5-2)

Use the information we discussed on the 5-2 guided reading.

Explain Wilson’s “New Freedom” (5-4)

Free Enterprise – no government regulation

Regulating trusts “monopolies” gave the government too much power

Examples

Tariff reform

Allowing foreign competition to force US corporations to become more efficient, economical, and enterprising

16th amendment – direct taxation (income tax) sources of government revenue

Federal Reserve Act – ability of Federal Government to set interest rates

-The Federal Reserve can lower interest rates to stimulate the economy

*Explain how Roosevelt and Wilson views of business and the role of government were different and/or the same.

Provide examples for each Presidents’ policies

(ie. Roosevelt’s bureau of corporations)

1 page in length

1 paragraph each to explain Roosevelt's and Wilson's beliefs and 1 paragraph to compare/contrast their philosophies.
